2024 #20 – West – Ohio – Illinois

April 9th – 12th

On April 9th I visited with Alyse and Guthrie with their new baby in Delaware OH (see Travelogue #18) then drove west to Indian Lake Campground. My visits with family and friends over the past 3 months was complete and now it’s time to head west toward home. Wow, what an incredible experience! My heart is still warm from all the reunions and visits with people I have known for a long time but many I had not seen for many years. It was 6pm when I got to the campground, took a walk around the lake, and had a relaxing evening. The next day I had a late start, taking it easy and getting some housekeeping things taken care of. I headed west toward Indianapolis and booked a night at a Harvest Host winery named Cedar Creek (HH gets local businesses to welcome RVs to park there). I went inside to sign in and had some wine tastings then purchased a bottle of their wine.

The next day was April 11th, my 77th birthday. I’ve been so lucky to have had so many visits with family and friends, that I didn’t feel alone, I still had their company all around me. I treated myself to a good Mexican lunch with a Margarita. That night I made it to Springfield IL and stayed at the fairgrounds. I spent several nights there so I could explore Springfield, Abraham Lincoln’s home town! Lincoln’s home is a National Historic Site. I watched a historical movie and took a guided tour of the home, then walked around town. There were some impressive buildings downtown: the Old Capitol Building and the current one, a lovely stone church, and other interesting architecture.
