This travelogue starts on the afternoon of Feb. 1st, after I said goodbye to Sunna. I stayed at Linda’s house in Los Lunas, just south of Albuquerque, and had a quiet afternoon. A small flock of Sandhill Cranes came by to say hello. I cleaned out the trailer and moved Sunna’s beds and blankets to the back seat of the truck.
The next morning I continued on my journey, heading to Texas. I left around 9am heading south to Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. I remember going there with Sunna in 2014. I cried most of the way. It’s a beautiful place, and I drove around it, took some walks and some photos. The beauty of nature was very calming for me. I wanted to go to Roswell, but the road was closed, so I headed northeast and ended up in Mountainair. The park host warned of heavy weather and winds coming, so I stayed there for 2 nights. Stayed inside most of the second day because it was very windy! Heading east, I took the road thru Cloudcroft, over 7000′ and lots of snow, spent one more night in NM then headed into Texas. The next few days were focused on driving thru the open space of TX.
On Feb. 8th, I met John Robinson, Lew’s son, at the Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Lew was a Korean War vet. Most people knew him as Oscar, but I knew him as Lew (his middle name was Lewis). I was very close friends with him and his wife Judy and in fact I was their maid of honor in Hawaii in 1973. I brought some red roses for them. John and I had not met before, so we had a nice visit and got to know each other a bit. He lives in Eastern WA and his sister Andrea lives in Las Vegas. Later in the day I drove north to Frisco TX and had lunch with Pam and Bob Hatch. Pam and I worked together in the 80’s when I commuted to Redmond from Lopez Island. I was so busy talking to them that I forgot to take a picture or two. When I left there, I drove east to a state park at Cooper Lake. It was a long day full of memories.
