I was planning to go to North Carolina to spend Christmas with Kelley and Casey who moved to Asheville in 2023. After hurricane Helene hit the Asheville area, there was horrendous damage done to the area and no power, or internet, or water. We were finally able to talk on the phone, and we agreed that my visiting for Christmas was probably not a good idea. Several months after the hurricane, Kelley called me and invited me to come anyway. Things were improving and getting back to normal. So I agreed! And made reservations to fly to Charlotte NC. My first stop in NC was in Clemmons to visit Danny and Julie Gilbreath, former Lopez Islanders. After spending a few days with them, I drove to Asheville to Kelley and Casey’s house. They had to work Monday and Tuesday before Christmas, so I spent those days shopping for presents and exploring. Kelley had suggested that I focus on presents from local crafts and artists to support the community that needs so much assistance.
