March 3rd – 9th
Tues Mar 3: I got up before 4:30am (!) to see the lunar eclipse. The moon was covered by about 3/4 when I awoke and then it was fully covered. It was completely dark for over an hour before I could see it again, at 6:20am. Daylight started to arrive and eventually I couldn’t see the moon any more at all as it dropped down over the horizon. It was pretty fascinating! I contacted Seth’s axle place, and did some research on my own… then I drove down to explore the Wes Watkins Park and Campground, which is near the Axle place in Shawnee OK. I met some nice folks. I will stay two more nights then move there on Thursday.
Wed Mar 4: I slept in and then I called Seth and we talked about axle options. I ordered the parts (2 weeks to arrive). I chose a different axle, stronger than the original one. In the afternoon I drove to Guthrie OK and walked around the downtown area. Lots of interesting buildings. Guthrie was the territorial capital, then it became the first capital of OK in 1907. In 1910 voters chose Oklahoma City to be its capital. It is a historic city and county seat in Logan County, located 32 miles north of Oklahoma City, famous for having the largest National Historic Landmark district in the United States featuring 19th-century Victorian architecture. Thurs Mar 5: I got packed up, emptied holding tanks, and drove to Wes Watkins Park, near McCloud and close to Shawnee. I stayed on back roads and drove gently (remember, the axle is bent!). Got settled in and walked around the park. It is large without a lot of rigs there.
Fri Mar 6: Did some shopping in McCloud, looking for some hardware stores. The day ended in heavy rain, hail, and high winds, so I just went back to the park and fixed dinner.
Sat Mar 7: The rain had stopped so I drove into Oklahoma City and explored the downtown capital area. Some very impressive buildings. When I got back to the park, I walked along the beach and watched the setting sun, with lots of geese floating by.
Sun Mar 8: Daylight Savings starts. Did some exercises and errands. Then I went to Joe Barnes Regional Park in Midwest City OK and walked all around it. It is a large park: water- and wildlife-filled, family-friendly park, with picnic tables, sports fields, a dog park and walking trails. There was also a lovely and unique children’s play area often known as the Spirit of Midwest City Playground.
I stayed at Wes Watkins park for most of the next two weeks until I could get the axle replaced. More explorations around Oklahoma City to come.
