2026 #4 – New Mexico & Wildlife

February 3rd – 9th

Linda and I worked together in the early 70’s – I was working in San Francisco for a small software company and she was working for the same company in Los Angeles. She moved to NM around the time we moved to Lopez, in the early 80’s. We have remained in touch all these years! She has had horses and dogs for years, I guess that was part of what we shared. I rode horses when I was young and when we moved to Lopez in the 80’s we had our own horses (as well as dogs and goats, etc).

I had been having problems with the slide-out on my trailer and Linda’s son was able to connect me with a reliable repair shop, but it was an hour north of their place. The owner of the shop looked at my trailer and how the slide worked, and concluded that there was no problem with the slide or motor (whew!) but the problem was likely a low level on the battery and low temps. That was a relief, and they didn’t charge me anything! On the way back to Linda’s I stopped at the Albuquerque International Balloon Museum. I had gone to the Balloon Fiesta in 2019 after Virginia had passed away. It was a memorable experience on my bucket list, in spite of my grief. It was fun to see it again.

I took Ruby, a 6 month old Rottweiler mix dog, for walks every day, and she hated to see me go! My next destination was an Escapees RV park in Deming NM, on my way to Texas. On the way I stopped at the Bosque Del Apache National Wildlife Refuge. I had been there several times, once in early December when the Sandhill Cranes were there in the tens of thousands. People gathered in the early morning to watch them take flight – it was amazing. Click link: 2016 Sandhill Cranes to see some pics. I stayed several nights in Deming NM, watched the Super Bowl with some other folks (WA won!!) then left Monday morning heading to Big Bend NP in Texas!
