Saturday March 14th to Thursday19th
In this episode I was still staying at Wes Watkins Park, waiting for the axle parts to come in (hopefully in the coming week).
On March 14th I drove from McCloud to near the center of Oklahoma City to visit the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. I wandered all around it for about 3 hours, lots of interesting history. Made some stops for groceries and got back to the park when the sun was setting.
The next day I didn’t leave the park because there were a lot of high winds predicted and it was going to be 27F overnight! The next day it was below 40F but I headed out and went to the town of Norman, took a walk through the town and the U of OK campus with interesting buildings and some museums. I drove by Lake Thunderbird but didn’t stop because the parking was too expensive. When I got back to Wes Watkins park the weather was better so I walked around the park and then fixed dinner.
On Tuesday the 17th I called Seth at the Axle Surgeons shop and he said he was going to go pick up a delivery of some axles, but he didn’t know yet if mine was in the group. He called me in mid afternoon – my axle was in! So I spent the rest of the day packing up so that I could drive the 7 miles to Shawnee where the shop is. I also visited some of my new friends in the park because I was going to leave before 8am in the morning. I got up early and left the park before 8am, skipped coffee and breakfast, and arrived about 8:10am. They asked me to take the trailer tires to a nearby tire shop because the new axle used 6 nut wheel rims (old one used 5 nut rims) plus a new tire for my spare. I made a breakfast stop then went back to the axle shop. They finished the repairs with the new tires and wheel rims and it was all done by noon! YAY! On the road again! I spent over 3 weeks in Oklahoma, a new experience for me to explore!
I headed to a Core of Engineers RV park on Lake Canton now NW of Oklahoma City, got there about 5pm. Finally got settled by 6:30p, took a walk in the lovely lakeside park, made dinner, watched the sunset and fell into bed after a long day! The next day was kind of a blur, after a long sleep. I spent the day driving and ended up at Beaver Dunes park on the eastern end of the Oklahoma Panhandle. Temps were between 80 and 91, so I planned my route to get to higher altitudes. Next stop, New Mexico.
